Postmodernism: D2 Read & Response

This reading is a very general overview of Post-modernism. In this response, please feel free to research and respond directly to the reading or consider drawing a contrast between postmodernism & altermodernism. Please try and think objectively about the topic and consider it in terms of how it impacts art.

Thanks,
Brandon

  1. I did not care for this article. In the first post, when I mistakenly responded to all of the articles, much of the criticism arose from this one in particular. It was hard to pick out quotes to best exemplify the "fluffy" style because there were so many gems:
"...transforming the notion of totality into a project of open-ended infinity."
"...it speaks a language of fragmentation and perpetual crisis..."
I knew we were going to be on rocky ground after the author indicated that postmodernism defies easy definition. This author makes postmodernism sound like the art of using as many words as possible to say as little as possible.
Technically, postmodern art is any art that has taken place since the modern era. Perhaps art in this era has diversified enough, or splintered enough that there are no central trends that define it well.
Rather than trying to fit art of a particular period into a logically progressive narrative of action and reaction... where movement Z was a response to movement Y which was a response to movement X... perhaps it would be more meaningful to look at contemporary art from an anthropologist's perspective, and simply ask what the art we produce today says about today's society. Art is a reflection of society, not a response to it, no matter how much the artist might wish otherwise.
In the art pieces I chose, I decided to stick with pop surrealism because... I like it.

Altermodernism is a reaction against cultural homogenization. It’s an attempt to say “Hey, we’re a unique culture with unique values, unique history, unique issues. This art reflects us. If you look at it religiously, modernism is faith, postmodernism is atheism (rejection of faith), and altermodernism is a particular religious view or tradition. Post-modernism was a reaction to modernism, which is about broad, universal themes, and post-modernism is about deconstructing those themes. Altermodernism Is about valuing the individuality that exists among us.

Postmodernism is era that follows Modernism. In Wikipedia it gives it the term for postmodernism as "skeptical interpretations of culture, literature, art, philosophy, economics, architecture, fiction, and literary criticism. Interestingly it says, "Because postmodernism is a reactionary stereotype, it is often used to describe writers, artists, or critics who give the impression they believe in no absolute truth or objective reality." "It may derogatorily refer to "any of various movements in reaction to modernism that are typically characterized by... ironic self-reference and absurdity (as in literature)" or to "a theory that involves a radical reappraisal of modern assumptions about culture, identity, history, or language".

Nicolas Bourriaud defines Altermodern as "artists working in all media, from painting, to film and video, to extraordinary installations and features many new works being shown for the first time." Bourriaud uses the term, ‘Altermodern’ to show how artists have reacted to societies increasing global influences. In contrast, Bourriaud says, "Altermodern claims that the period defined as postmodernism has come to an end and a new culture for the 21st century is emerging." Art is impacted because "the Increased communication, travel and migration are having a huge effect on the way we live now. Bourriaus believes that postmodernism is different than altermodernism because it attempts to globally commercialize the branding of art where altermodernism is against it. Bourriaud said that, " Altermodern describes how artists at the forefront of their generation are responding to this globalized culture with a new spirit and energy." He asks the question is postmodernism is dead?
